U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, together with the State of Hesse, will host a public commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Berlin Airlift on June 16.
In addition to our public event June 16, there will be a workforce day June 15 that is open to DoD ID card holders. The event is similar to June 16, but smaller in size due to parking and transportation constraints. There will also be a school-focused day on June 17, which is open only to surrounding schools.
From 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. on the Clay Kaserne Airfield, visitors can enjoy food, fun, live music and history while getting the chance to see historic aircraft from the time of the Berlin Airlift, and current aircraft types from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force.
“U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, previously an Air Force airfield, was one of the main locations that launched aircraft in support of the Berlin Airlift,” said Col. David W. Mayfield, Commander of the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden. “It was a historic event, and the largest humanitarian airlift in history. The Berlin Airlift was also the beginning of a partnership, and eventual alliance, between the United States and Germany that only continues to grow today."
Tickets for the event are not required, however, the event does have a cap on how many people can attend the event at one time. If the cap is reached, people will queue at the entrance until people exit the event.
On the day of the June 16th event, event attendees will enter from the main gate of Clay Kaserne. The access road to Clay Kaserne is closed for motorized private transport. The city of Wiesbaden will set up park & ride areas. Signage will be in place on A66, A671 and B455. Event attendees will only be able to access the event by bike, on foot, by taxi or by shuttle bus. In addition to the regular bus service, ESWE Verkehr offers reinforcements on public bus lines 5, 15 and 28 on weekends. Further information will be published in the run-up to the event at www.eswe-verkehr.de and in the city's news releases.
For both June 15th & 16th, DoD ID Cardholders will be able to utilize shuttles from Hainerberg and Mainz Kastel. More transportation details will be released closer to the event.
Please note that no dogs, other than official service dogs, are allowed onto the event grounds. This is because there are no shady areas or lawns at the event location and the asphalt gets extremely hot in the sun.
In addition, the following items are prohibited in the festival area: glass containers, alcoholic beverages, Cannabis, knives, weapons of all kinds, defense sprays, fireworks and explosives, spray cans, laser pointers, tools, large bulky items such as camping chairs, backpacks with frames, coolers, etc., drones / UAVs.
There is a strict smoking ban on the event site.
Further information on the event can be found on the garrison's Facebook page. View the official press release here
