D-Day Squadron > Significance

Remembrances of D-Day still elicit a strong emotional effect, even though many decades have passed. The memory of those veterans, heading into certain danger, reminds us that average people – citizen soldiers – risked everything to help bring an end to World War II. Their contribution to the free world we live in today should be cherished now and into the future.

Did they know they would be successful? Certainly not, but that success in Normandy was critical to start a chain reaction that would advance the Allies across France and eventually all of occupied Europe. It was the tide that turned the War toward victory.

These ordinary men and women took up arms to become soldiers in the best army in the world, and the bravery of these citizen soldiers on that fateful day led the Allied forces to the liberation of France, and then to an end of the devastating War in Europe.

What can we learn from their experience, all these years later? How can we honor their service and sacrifice?

Join the D-Day Squadron and support their mission to develop and maintain an educational program celebrating the service and sacrifice of the citizen soldier and their role in bringing about victory in World War II. Together, we will ensure their memory and significance is appreciated for generations to come.
